I use Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10. I use Alban's Rivendell version 14.0-1
With the apt-get install of Rivendell you get sox 12 and RD version 14.0-2.
I had to force it to go back to the 14.0-1 and use symptic to lock the
earlier RD and have no problems with RD import... it normalizes to
-13db. If I let it upgrade to 14.0-2 the normalization doesn't happen
and my music is made at 0db with no normalisation.
